Constables ask for part‑time help, ballistic shield and cloud camera system; court weighs CJIS compliance and costs

Constable office representatives told the commissioners Aug. 27 they need an as‑needed pool for part‑time help, ballistic protection for high‑risk civil move‑outs, and upgraded vehicle and body cameras with CJIS‑compliant cloud storage.

Constable Benedetto (S22) described volatile writs of possession and said a ballistic shield would be a floor‑level safety tool for deputies during move‑outs: "...we put that shield against the door while he's doing that. He'll back out, and then we go in." The constables proposed a modest, on‑call block of hours (a suggested starting point: 16 hours/week per deputy; the transcript discussion ranged on rate and loaded cost estimates) so deputies who volunteer or reserve can be paid for service covering courts, move‑outs and other duties.

The constables also presented quotes for upgraded vehicle computers and a modern cloud camera system. Motorola (and other vendors) provided pricing scenarios; the Motorola five‑year licensing and support proposal for all constables was discussed at a total of about $83,830 (five‑year sum) with recurring annual licensing estimated in the meeting at roughly $16,000 per year. County staff flagged CJIS compliance requirements: older in‑car systems and local server storage are no longer supported, and a cloud‑hosted CJIS‑compliant option was presented as the recommended path. Commissioners asked county IT and the sheriff's staff to review the quotes and CJIS procedures and to bring a procurement recommendation back to the court.
