"So, the base cost to run this school is about 140,000," an administrator said while reviewing maintenance estimates and photos showing corroded cast‑iron pipe and trenched repairs. Staff presented a seven‑year maintenance projection of nearly $449,000 for Shields, compared with lower long‑term costs at similar‑age campuses. Trustees were shown photos of roof damage, broken clay pipes near student walkways and exposed plumbing that prompted partial building shutdowns while repairs were made. The presentation said 50 rooftop HVAC units exist on campus: many are older and parts may be scavenged or units repurposed across the district.
Administrators cautioned that some increases in identified student needs affect program and facility planning, and they emphasized the district will hold staff meetings and a series of public town halls before bringing a formal recommendation and costed options back to the board. The board did not take an immediate action; staff said a community engagement process and additional cost analysis are next steps.
