USFS backs proposed Couch Summit winter parking as locals and county discuss costs

Josh Ashmead, Camas County Road and Bridge supervisor, asked the board on Jan. 26, 2026 to consider creating improved winter parking on Couch Summit Road to address local access needs. Several local landowners and residents joined the discussion, including Fred Marolf; Bob and Michell Elliott; Rob Gonsales; Nick Bombini; Greg Johnson; Ted Strickler; and Adam Grock.
Ashmead presented the operational need; Commissioner Colter expressed concern about the amount spent on research and surveys over several years without property acquisition. Matt Filbert of the U.S. Forest Service told the board that USFS is in full support of the proposed parking lot. Rob Gonsales told the board he is willing to work with the county as the proposal advances. The minutes do not record a formal motion or vote on a specific parking project during this meeting.
