County approves purchase of two new garbage trucks; plans lease-and-sell strategy

The Geneva County Commission approved the purchase of two new garbage trucks at its Dec. 9 meeting after Solid Waste Director Dawn Smith and County Engineer Justin Barfield recommended a larger Kenworth model and favorable pricing. Smith said the auction market for garbage trucks is stronger now, and the county plans a two‑year lease while selling the two oldest garbage trucks to help pay off the note. "The plan is to sell the two oldest garbage trucks which should bring enough to pay off the note on the two newest trucks," Smith said.
Barfield confirmed the trucks are on the State Bid List. Commissioners voted 4‑0 to approve the purchase. Staff said the trucks are expected to be ready for delivery in early spring and that procurement will follow state procurement rules. The Commission also declared five pieces of public works equipment surplus for sale on GovDeals and approved the surplus declaration by a unanimous vote.
