Commission authorizes demolition of long-abandoned trailer on Airport Road over safety concerns
Summary
After attempts to have a private mover or junk dealers remove an abandoned trailer proved unsuccessful and the registered owner is incarcerated, the Geneva County Commission authorized Road & Bridge to demolish the trailer and haul debris to the landfill.
Sheriff Tony Helms told the Commission that a trailer abandoned on Airport Road since April was unmovable due to a missing tongue and attempts to contract its removal had failed; junk dealers advised the county to demolish the unit with an excavator and take debris to the landfill. The registered owner was identified as currently incarcerated, and the Sheriff said he had photographs documenting the trailer's unsafe condition.
Commissioner Weston Spivey moved to allow Road & Bridge to demolish the trailer and haul the debris to the landfill after the Sheriff reported his due diligence; Commissioner Todd Brannon seconded and the motion passed 4-0. Sheriff Helms described the trailer as “a safety hazard where it is located on the roadway and is a danger to the traveling public.” The Commission directed preservation of documentation associated with the effort to remove the trailer.
