House passes bill to expand access to criminal proceedings notification data

Representative Sherrill (speaker 35) told the chamber that House Bill 22‑21 updates the criminal proceedings notification system created four years earlier and mandates that court clerks make application data available to the Tennessee Sheriff's Association so victims can receive updates as cases progress. Sherrill said the measure helps prepare counties for constitutional changes (referenced as Marshy's Law) expected to give victims a right to notifications.
"The notification system only works if the data is there from the criminal court clerks," Sherrill said, explaining that the bill requires clerks to provide the application data necessary for administration of the system. The transcript shows committee amendment 1 adopted and, on floor vote, the clerk announced the bill had received a constitutional majority and the chair declared the bill passed.
Next steps: the bill advances under enrollment procedures and counties not yet participating will be expected to supply data to the association under the statute’s requirements.
