Court adopts 14-day pay period resolution to enable 24-hour fire shifts

Fire department leaders and county financial staff presented a proposal to adopt a 14-day pay period for firefighters so overtime would start after 106 hours in the pay period, aligning with the 29 U.S.C. §207(k) framework for public-safety work periods. Presenter said after modeling schedules the general fund appears to have sufficient overtime budget while the CAD fund may need a modest amendment (estimated about $3,300 through Sept. 30) to account for shift changes and coverage. "After plugging everything in...there is enough money in the overtime budget and associated fringes in the general fund to move to these 24-hour shifts," Brandon said, while recommending the court watch CAD overtime usage closely.
Commissioners discussed staffing patterns, volunteers, minimum-staffing policies and which stations would convert to 24/7 coverage (Stations 3 and 5). Court adopted the resolution with clarifying language that salaried administrative positions are excluded; the motion passed unanimously and staff were directed to monitor overtime and report back if additional adjustments are required.
