Putnam County commissioners grant 60‑day extension for rock‑quarry rezoning hearing

The Putnam County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Sept. 17 to grant a 60‑day extension for consideration of rezoning property from A1 to Natural Resources for a proposed rock quarry. Commissioner David Berry moved to grant the extension and said the continued hearing would be held on Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the Putnam County Courthouse unless otherwise notified; Commissioner Tom Helmer seconded and the motion carried.

Opponents of the rezoning, represented at the meeting by Eddie Felling, told the commission they had only just learned of the landowner’s request for an extension and asked that the continued hearing be scheduled in the evening and in a larger space so more residents could attend. "If the extension is granted, hold it in the evening and a larger space to accommodate everyone," Felling said, urging broader access for members of the public.

Landowner Eric Hayman had asked the board for the 60‑day extension. Commissioner Berry said he was concerned about late notice but felt that, having previously granted an extension to residents, the commission should grant the same courtesy to the landowner. The board recorded the action as approved unanimously; no roll‑call vote of individual commissioners was recorded in the minutes.

The special session opened at 9:00 a.m. at the Putnam County Courthouse and adjourned after the extension motion and a formal motion to adjourn. The continued rezoning hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the courthouse unless the board issues further notice.
