Commission approves contract for on‑site juvenile detention medical services

Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Heather Plager said the county does not currently provide medical services in the juvenile facility and that staff must transport youth to community providers. "This is the same company that provides medical services to the inmates at the county jail and so they would basically do the same thing over for us with our juveniles," Plager said, noting the arrangement would add nurses who could administer medications and perform in‑house assessments.
Detention Director Glenn Ingram explained that without medical staff the facility faces liability and can be constrained in managing psychotropic medications or other health needs. Commissioners asked about costs and potential savings compared with transport expenses; commissioners approved the contract as budgeted and noted the agreement is annual and renewable pending future evaluation.
