Board authorizes up to $85,000 over five years for regional opioid-abatement jail program

Mr. Harvey presented a request that Campbell County join a regional application with Blue Ridge Regional Jail to use state opioid-abatement funds for in-jail substance-use intervention and reentry services. He said the state would cover about 90% of the grant and localities would match 10%; the county's total share, if enacted across five years and five participating localities, would be up to $85,000. "The request from Blue Ridge Regional Jail would total over a 5 year period, up to $85,000," Harvey told the board.
Supervisors asked whether the $85,000 was the total for the five-year term; Harvey confirmed it was. Board members discussed prior commitments of opioid-settlement dollars and the availability of approximately $318,000 in collected local opioid-abatement funds. A motion was made and carried to authorize up to $85,000 from local opioid settlement funds and to permit the county administrator to finalize necessary agreements with the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority and the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority. The vote was taken by voice and the motion carried; staff indicated it would proceed with formal agreements and any required memoranda.
