Council approved a city sponsorship of up to $5,000 for Culture Minds Incorporated’s annual gala, which the group said will honor Black educators and raise funds for mentoring, tutoring and mental health supports for middle and high school students.
Staff said the request met the city’s sponsorship policy and the event is budgeted for about $8,000. Anise Durst, founder of Culture Minds, told council the program currently serves roughly 12–25 La Porte ISD students and provides mentoring, tutoring and parenting resources at no cost: “It's free,” Durst said, describing mental‑health supports and plans for college and career events. Council members voiced support and one suggested the city consider a broader budget line for youth organization support in the future.
The council moved, seconded and approved the sponsorship. Staff said the city’s sponsorship policy requires council review for awards above $1,000 and that organizations the city belongs to are handled separately.
