County Approves Tower and Site Leases; Supervisors Ask for Standardized Notification on Equipment Changes

The Finance Committee authorized two site-lease agreements on Jan. 6. The first, with Tarpon Towers III, LLC, establishes an initial five-year term with five additional five-year renewal options, monthly rent of $1,200 and annual increases of 3%. The second, with Saia Communications, Inc., is an initial five-year term with two five-year renewal options and an annual license fee of $3,300 with 2% annual increases. Motions to authorize execution of both agreements were moved by Supervisor Leuer and carried by the committee.
During discussion after the approvals, Supervisor Rudgers urged the board to "pay close attention to the assessed value of the telecommunication towers" when towers are used for new purposes and asked about notification procedures when new equipment is installed. Supervisor Leuer responded that towers are assessed using a schedule provided to assessors by the state and that special use permits provide local notification; Rudgers suggested the county adopt a standardized countywide notification process. No formal change to the leases was recorded in the minutes.
