Public Works seeks telematics upgrades, applies for multiple bridge grants

Public Works Director Scott Kieffaber and Road and Bridge Superintendent Joe Gardner updated the Jackson County commissioners on operations, equipment options and grant activity at the Jan. 12 meeting. A Murphy Tractor representative, Steve Chermok, said installing a modem and three‑wire system in non‑John Deere equipment would cost about $469–$600 each and that the system uses satellite and cellular service, with monitoring available through a phone or computer application; he said their offering can also provide geofencing and fuel‑management notifications.
Scott provided the Road & Bridge call log showing 605 calls with 538 completed and reported that three graders were down last week but have since been repaired. He said $69,817.10 remains in the W Road budget and that he and a staff member (identified as Matt in the minutes) applied for the 2028 State off‑road and local system bridge grant for multiple projects (T7 & 215 Road, P & 292 Road, J4 & 256 Road, and R & 324 Road). Scott also submitted updated Hamm Quarries pricing: 1¼‑inch roadstone rising from $17.27/ton to $18.31 and 2‑inch roadstone from $17.69/ton to $18.75 at the Soldier location.
