County reports it is no longer in Rural Opportunity Zone program but remains liable for prior participants

Darren Myers provided an informational update: Ellis County is no longer an eligible Rural Opportunity Zone (ROZ/RAS) county, so the commission does not need to pass an annual ROZ resolution, but the county still must honor payments to individuals previously approved while the county was in the program. "As of last year, we were billed just over $5,700 for what we had set aside," Myers said.
Myers said the tuition-reimbursement portion of benefits is administered locally while the income-tax rebate is handled by the state Department of Commerce; payments continue for up to five years as long as recipients remain eligible. Commissioners asked how many years remain on the county’s obligations; Myers said approximately four more years including the current year, depending on ongoing eligibility.
