Wabaunsee County transit reports 186 active riders; fare to neighboring counties raised to $10

Transportation Manager Kristin Coon told the commission that Wabaunsee County Public Transportation currently has seven drivers and 186 active riders on the roster. She said the program added 50 new riders in 2025 and eight so far in 2026; in 2025 there were 167 cancellations (mostly by riders) and four turn-downs due to vehicle or driver availability.
Coon said the rider fee to travel to any neighboring county was raised to $10 from $7 last year and vehicle maintenance costs have increased roughly 20 percent. She said the fleet includes four KDOT vehicles (three transit vehicles and one mini-van) and that one transit vehicle has been approved for replacement in 2026. Coon also noted participation in regional meetings on emergency planning where county transit provided real-life examples of assisting during emergencies.
