Clay County begins 2026 delinquent tax sale process and authorizes $368,852.96 abatement

County Treasurer Christine Swaim reported that the December delinquent tax sale generated an estimated $99,000, reimbursed the county $6,300 for publication costs, and applied about $54,000 toward outstanding taxes. Swaim told commissioners she would like to begin the process for the next delinquent tax sale, which currently includes 27 properties.
Commissioner Carlson moved to start the 2026 delinquent tax sale process using Klenda Austerman Attorneys at Law of Wichita to handle the procedure; the motion passed unanimously. Separately, Commissioner Mayo moved to authorize Chairman Thurlow to sign and abate $368,852.96 related to the 2025 delinquent tax sale; Commissioner Carlson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
