Commission approves one-year EMS contract; January payment amount to be set in January

The Commission approved a one-year contract with McCook County EMS and agreed to negotiate the January payment amount at the Jan. 14 Commission meeting amid some concern about paying half the appropriation early.
McCook County EMS President Brad (BJ) Stiefvater presented a one-year EMS contract with verbiage changes requested by city attorneys; city finance officers Lori Heumiller (Salem), Kathy Townsend (Canistota) and Nichole Siemonsma (Montrose) attended the discussion. Stiefvater said he would present a new contract in January with the opt-out dollar amount and noted the January payment covers his line of credit. Auditor Geralyn Sherman questioned a County opt-out for a private business and expressed concern about paying half of the 2025 appropriation in January given the service turmoil and available funds.
After discussion Commissioner Chuck Mehlbrech moved to approve a one-year contract and to negotiate the January payment dollar amount at the Jan. 14 Commission meeting; Dean Koch seconded and the motion carried. The minutes record approval of the one-year contract and the decision to set the January payment amount in January.
