Roads update: Jackson County reports heavy rock spending, bridge work and a $7,724.50 signs purchase

Public Works Director Scott Kieffaber and Road and Bridge Superintendent Joe Gardner reported on Jan. 20 that crews have already spent approximately $100,000 from the county's rock budget so far this year and listed multiple road repairs and rock placements under way. Scott said the annual bridge inspection is complete; the bridge at 246th and J2 requires additional guardrail work before a final walk-through.
Scott recommended reducing the Weed Department cost-share program to 14%, which the Commissioners agreed to. The board also approved a purchase order from National Signs for $7,724.50 for signs and posts; Commissioner Gerhardt moved and Commissioner Kelly seconded, and the motion passed 3–0. Scott and Joe described recent work including tube installations, new entrances, and plans to excavate a failing chip-and-seal segment south of W Road and 16 Highway on 174th and replace it with rock and compaction.
Commissioners discussed chip-and-seal deterioration, potential emulsion/leveling products, and funding options for additional treatments; staff said funding would need to be identified before purchasing new leveling products.
