McCook County EMS warns it could close on Jan. 1 if county funding isn’t restored

A letter from BJ Stiefvater of McCook County EMS Inc. was presented to the Commission, stating the Board’s $50,000 reduction of the EMS appropriation left the company facing a shortfall. The letter said the county is "looking at the same dollars ($254,300) in 2025 as received in 2023" and warned that "if we do not receive the $304,300, we will be unable to provide service and will be closing the service effective Jan. 1, 2025." The letter also offered the company for sale to the county at a fair appraised value and offered assistance to transition the service if needed.
Commissioners discussed the funding issue during the provisional budget review; Auditor Sherman said the change resulted from prior direction to seek help from cities to cover increasing costs. The letter was entered into the record and no immediate vote to restore funds was taken during the Aug. 13 meeting. The letter said the company would be willing to attend future meetings to secure funds and suggested contract language (an annual percentage over CPI increase) to stabilize funding.
