Ellis County commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution on Jan. 6 to make posted bridge weight‑limit signs enforceable on load‑rated county structures.
Brendan McKay, public works director, told the board the resolution formalizes enforcement of signs placed after the Kansas local bridge‑rating program assessed structures following a high‑profile bridge failure out of state and a subsequent federal regulatory focus on load rating. "To make them enforceable, it has to be passed by county resolution," McKay said.
McKay explained the county does not possess vehicle‑scales to independently confirm overweight loads; law enforcement and Kansas Highway Patrol would be involved in weight‑violation investigations. "If they see something, they will report it, and we will follow it up the chain... let the sheriff's office know," he said. Commissioners asked about whether county vehicles would police posted structures; McKay said county crews operate under the same load rules and would report concerns but not staff enforcement by routine patrolling.
The motion to approve the resolution carried 3–0.
