Winn Parish sheriff says litter pickup effort and jail housing changes could save parish about $9,000–$10,000 monthly

Sheriff Joshua McAllister told the Winn Parish Police Jury on Aug. 19 that his office began a parishwide litter pickup last week and collected more than 200 large DOTD bags. He said the Sheriff’s Office will absorb operational costs for that effort — bags, mileage and deputy time — while the Jury covers port-a-john and dumpster rental. The sheriff asked the Jury for one more month of inmate-cost support as he works to restore Department of Corrections inmates to the jail.
McAllister said he hopes to reduce the parish inmate housing daily rate from $15.00 to $14.00, which he estimated would save roughly $4,000 per month; combining that reduction with the litter-pickup arrangement could produce about $9,000–$10,000 in monthly savings. "The jail is to house inmates and not make a profit," McAllister said, framing the request as a transition measure while the office manages jail capacity and costs. Jurors thanked the sheriff for the assistance and the interagency cooperation during the transition.
