Tom Salzer presented a map and recommended cleaning adjudicated property behind Bellaire Baptist Church that has been adjudicated to the parish since 2015. Salzer said the overgrowth is damaging neighboring homeowners’ fences and raised public-safety concerns given proximity to the church playground. Parish staff estimated cleanup costs at approximately $9,400 and proposed that, once cleaned and brought into compliance, the church could pursue the parish’s caretaker provisions for adjudicated property to assume long-term maintenance.
John Ed Jorden moved to proceed with cleaning the adjudicated property identified as Tax Assessment No. 163485 and Mr. Philip Rodgers seconded; the chairman called for a vote and the motion carried, with Chris Marsiglia opposed. Dr. Ken Ward said the item will be considered by the full police jury on March 3. The committee discussed that transferring adjudicated land to a church under caretaker provisions would typically remove the parcel from the tax rolls but would provide a long-term steward for the property.
