Comptroller reports most recommendations closed in county key-card and ID audits; two key-card items remain open

Jennifer Folliard, the comptroller's director of audits, told the Milwaukee County Board Committee on Audit that the office combined two related audits — courthouse access key cards and the county ID card program — into a single status report because the recommendations and management responsibilities overlapped. "So for the key card audit, we made 11 recommendations for facilities to strengthen their overall policies, establish reviews to assist management in the tracking of active key cards, and establish strong internal controls," Folliard said. She reported that as of this update, 9 of the 11 key-card recommendations have been closed and two remain open and on track for completion by the end of the year.
On the county ID audit, Folliard said 3 of the 11 recommendations have been implemented, including updated policies and procedures, sheriff's office training on screening county IDs, and a new process in facilities for background checks on contractor IDs. "This is a good effort for the 1st status report," she said. The comptroller's office plans to continue follow-up and expects to return with another update in January. The presentation was informational; no committee action was requested.
