Optimist Club honors deputy and firefighter at Troup County work session

The LaGrange Optimist Club recognized two local public‑safety employees during the Troup County Board of Commissioners’ June 3 work session.
An Optimist Club representative described Deputy Robert “Mitch” Poole’s response during a recent winter storm—transporting coworkers, clearing trees and temporarily filling additional duties at the jail—and presented him with the Club’s Deputy of the Year award. Major Jeff Duran, introduced during the presentation, told commissioners, “I can't put into words what Mitch Poole has meant to us since he's came to the Troup County Sheriff's Office. He's been a deputy… wherever he's needed, he's always steps up to the play.”
The Optimist Club also awarded firefighter Owen Tyree for training and volunteer work, including helping establish the county dive team and refurbishing the team’s trailer. Battalion Chief Scott Hester praised Tyree as “an amazing asset” who completed rescue‑diver certification and volunteered carpentry skills to ready the county’s equipment.
The awards were delivered as part of the Club’s long‑running Respect for Law program, which the presenter said the Club adopted locally to recognize law‑enforcement and fire personnel. Commissioners acknowledged the presentations and thanked the Optimist Club for the recognitions.
