DOTD acknowledges approach ramp defects at Bayou Chevreuil bridge; temporary overlay planned

Parish President Peter Dufresne told the council that the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development acknowledged deficiencies in the approach ramps on the Highway 20 Bayou Chevreuil bridge and described a two-step repair plan.
"Beginning next week, depending on weather conditions, contractors will begin overlaying the approach on both ends of the bridge with new asphalt to level the road surface," he said, describing that as a temporary fix to avoid a detour. Dufresne said engineers will redesign the approach ramps using pilings to reinforce the road base with a permanent solution expected within about 60 days; electronic signal lights and flaggers will direct traffic through single-lane operations during work.
Dufresne said DOTD expects the repairs can be made without a complete closure that would force a roughly 60-mile detour. Council members were asked to notify residents and be patient while the temporary and permanent repairs proceed.
