Parish pushes Salvador shoreline, marsh-creation projects to CPRA master plan

Saint Charles Parish Coastal Zone Manager Laday briefed the committee on submissions to the CPRA master plan 2029 that passed initial screening. He said the LaBranch Marsh Creation project intends to create about 660 acres of marsh using roughly 4,000,000 cubic yards of dredged material from Lake Pontchartrain and listed an estimated E&D cost of $8,029,000. "It was to create 660 acres of marsh via placement of about 4,000,000 cubic yards of dredged material from Lake Pontchartrain," Laday said.
Laday described an integrated package of four Salvador Wildlife Management Area projects submitted together: Salvador shoreline protection (about 5.5 miles of riprap), Bayou Cuba shoreline protection (≈2.6 miles), Tank Pond shoreline protection (≈2 miles) and Salvador Hydrological Restoration (dredging about 16 miles of waterways). He said E&D funding for Salvador shoreline protection was obtained from CPRA and additional funding for construction is being sought. Laday said feedback is expected between July and September and that projects passing E&D may later receive construction dollars through CPRA's funding process.
Laday also noted the parish submitted the shield projects to other funding sources (including a Louisiana land trust effort to capture BP settlement funds) and that proposals not selected in this solicitation can be revised and resubmitted in future CPRA solicitations.
