Planning commission backs appeal to allow second kitchen as accessory use; county to hold public hearing on text amendment

Kenny Cook, Miami County planning director, told the Board the Planning Commission voted to recommend approval of an appeal concerning a second kitchen and accessory structure. Cook said commissioners found existing definitions “didn't provide for” the use they were enforcing and that the appeal was approved to recognize a kitchen used principally as an accessory to a dwelling that also processes on‑site materials. He said the Planning Commission will publish notice and bring a text amendment as a public hearing item in August to update regulations.
Cook said the item reflects recurring ambiguity in how the county defines accessory structures versus primary dwellings and that the August hearing will include discussion of kitchens, bathrooms and other accessory uses. He asked the Board to expect the item on the July 29 agenda for further consideration after public notice and the Planning Commission’s recommendation.
