Commissioner warns Miami County is spending more than it brings in

Commissioner Paul Scripps told the commission during opening comments that a county cash-analysis he reviewed shows the county is spending more than it takes in and is drawing down cash reserves. "In layman's terms, we're expending more than we're bringing in every year and we're drawing down on cash," Scripps said, noting the analysis included assumptions of 5% expense increases and 3% revenue growth but did not account for department overages or expiring grants.
Scripps urged commissioners to treat the forecast seriously because delayed action could require more extreme corrective measures later. He also flagged potential state-level legislation that could cap growth below the Midwest consumer price index and said that would further complicate budgeting. The chair and other commissioners agreed the board needs to control spending to hold the line on taxes and said they would devote time to the budget work during the separate budget session later that morning.
