VDOT outlines paving and bridge work for Greene County, including Middle River Road plan

VDOT staff told Greene County supervisors the agency's draft allocations for the secondary system include multiyear projects and several bridge replacements.
Matthew Mishati, assistant resident engineer, said the county maintains about 80 miles of gravel roads and that about 40 miles meet traffic-count thresholds for the unpaved-to-hard-surface program. For FY2027, VDOT proposed funding that would allow Middle River Road (approximately 1.26 miles) to be paved over three fiscal years; Mishati said asphalt surfacing is the likely option though the county could pursue less expensive tar-and-chip alternatives.
Mishati also described bridge work in the pipeline: a full replacement for the Route 636 crossing at Goose Pond Road over Swift Run, planned in phases with construction expected in spring 2028 and completion in fall 2028; Beasley Road over Blue Run targeted for rehabilitation in summer 2029; and a superstructure replacement on Bacon Hollow Road (Route 627 over Roche River) scheduled to start June 1 with an estimated eight-week duration and a planned detour. Mishati said crews hope to finish Bacon Hollow sooner than the estimate and that Standard Street repairs and paving were imminent, with pipe replacements and patching close to completion on South River Road.
Board members pressed staff on scheduling and options for cheaper surfacing, and Mishati said VDOT can discuss spot improvements and field re-checks where necessary. The board asked VDOT to return with details when the six-year plan is revisited.
