Undersheriff outlines Axon consolidation options; commissioners weigh deadline and costs

Undersheriff Matt Kelly briefed the commission on a proposed consolidation of Axon services that would bundle body cameras, in-car cameras and cloud services. Kelly said the county has already paid about $100,000 of the 2026 total and has roughly $15,000 remaining to pay for the rest of the year.
Kelly said additional features such as redaction and auto-tagging are being added to the service but would not be charged to the county for a period if a decision is made before the vendor’s deadline; after that point, implementation fees and added items would carry additional costs. "We get a year and a half's worth of that for no cost... but anything after the June 30, they wouldn't allow any of the items that he was throwing in for no cost," Kelly said.
Commissioners asked whether eliminating the 'tap' (the equipment-refresh provision) would materially reduce costs; Kelly said unbundling items would lower some line items but the bundled savings are where most of the discount comes from and buy-out costs for equipment can be large. Given vendor timing constraints, commissioners indicated they would revisit the item but did not vote on a consolidated contract on June 4.
