Rabbi Elizabeth Bahar of Temple Beth Israel delivered the invocation at the Aug. 20 Houston County Commission meeting and recounted the congregation’s history in Middle Georgia. She said the temple began in a room above a candy store in Macon in 1859 founded by 11 immigrants from Germany and France, that the current synagogue building was constructed in 1902, and that members of the congregation participated in the civil-rights movement in the 1960s. She also spoke about an antisemitic event in June 2023 and the subsequent outpouring of unity across Middle Georgia in support of the synagogue.
Each board member expressed appreciation for Rabbi Bahar’s remarks and the historical perspective she shared during the invocation.
