Houston County to seek EPD consistency determination for 44-acre C&D landfill expansion

The Houston County Board of Commissioners voted Aug. 20 to authorize Chairman Dan Perdue to sign and send a consistency determination to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division for a proposed 44-acre expansion of the county’s construction-and-demolition (C&D) landfill. Utility Director Terry Dietsch told the board during a public hearing that the expansion would extend the landfill’s operational life by about 50 years and that both staff and consultants had confidence the site aligns with the county’s Solid Waste Management Plan.
Perdue said the expansion would enlarge the existing landfill footprint on property already owned by the county and estimated the permitting process would take around five years because of EPD requirements. Solid Waste Superintendent Jeff Smith was commended by Perdue for receiving a perfect score during a recent EPD inspection of the C&D facility. Following the public hearing the board approved the consistency letter by a unanimous vote.
