Patrick County to relocate existing generator to former School Board building; Board approves $11,850

The Patrick County Board of Supervisors voted January 12 to fund relocation and connection of an existing county-owned 48 kW Generac generator to the former School Board building so the facility can serve as an Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Emergency Services staff said maintaining an operational EOC with auxiliary power is a state requirement and essential for continuity of government operations during power outages. Scottie Hylton described the proposal, saying using the existing generator “would potentially save the county $300,000 dollars in terms of the cost to power the Administration building.” The Board approved allocating $11,850 from the EMS budget to pay for site work, a 400A automatic transfer switch and wiring to place auxiliary power at the former School Board building. The motion by Clayton Kendrick, seconded by Rick Swink, carried; Supervisor Marshall was recorded as absent for the vote.
Staff presented three vendor options in the record: a Hydro Air estimate to install an owner-supplied generator for $11,850 (site prep and ATS), a Triangle Electric full-move and site-build quote of $57,095, and a Clark Brothers estimate of $27,600. The board-recorded motion directs staff to proceed with the funded option to connect the county-owned unit and to use remaining EMS budget funding as described in the presentation. The Board discussion emphasized redundancy reduction and near-term readiness of the EOC.
