Russell County commissioners approve 2026 leadership and appointments

The commission retained Duke Strobel as chair and Steve Reinhardt as vice-chair and unanimously approved a full slate of 2026 appointments across health, emergency services, planning and economic development.
Duke Strobel, Chairman of the Russell County Commission, opened the Jan. 19 meeting and moved to keep the existing commission leadership, naming Strobel as chair and Steve Reinhardt as vice-chair; the motion, seconded by Commissioner Jason Krug, passed unanimously.
Strobel read the Commission Appointments for 2026, which the board approved by voice vote. Appointments recorded in the minutes include Sheriff Andrew Van Der Wege as Mental Health Representative; Jennifer Funk as Health Officer; Dr. Tyrel Somers as County Health Medical Consultant and Workman’s Comp Physician; Connie Schinkus as KPERS agent; and county newspaper designations of Russell County News and Lucas-Sylvan News as official newspapers. The minutes also list members and terms for the Russell County Planning Commission and named representatives to local and regional advisory boards.
