The board held an extended recognition segment celebrating student and staff achievements across Hanover County.
Mr. Whitley and Dr. Bob Staley introduced award winners including state Family & Consumer Sciences champions, all-state music ensemble members and the county’s Teacher of the Year. Dr. Staley noted the district was named a Best Community for Music Education for the 14th consecutive year, saying, "We are one of only 28 school divisions in Virginia to achieve this coveted status."
The board also recognized a school nurse for national board certification and Ashland Elementary’s head custodian, Michelle Green, for performing the Heimlich maneuver and saving a student; the board praised her "heroism" and public‑service response. Teachers, principals and TAC student representatives were invited forward for photos and applause. The recognitions were celebratory in tone and required no board action.
