Osceola County updates courthouse closure policy for severe winter weather

The Osceola County Board of Supervisors voted to close the courthouse to the public when ‘no travel is advised,’ delegating closure decisions to the chair, auditor, EMA director and secondary roads superintendent and allowing department heads to determine employee departures.
The Osceola County Board of Supervisors voted Jan. 13 to change its policy on courthouse closures during inclement weather so the courthouse will be closed to the public when county secondary roads advise ‘‘no travel.’’ The board approved the update by motion of Jayson Vande Hoef, seconded by Jeff Loring; the motion carried on a unanimous vote. The policy change applies to public access only; employees may continue working at department head discretion and may use personal time if they leave early.
Under the revised approach, the board chair, the county auditor, the emergency management (EMA) director and the secondary roads operations superintendent will confer to decide whether to close the courthouse to the public. Department heads will determine when employees may leave on those days and the board will investigate whether sick-time policy language can be amended to allow sick time use in these circumstances. The board did not adopt a separate employee-leave rule at the meeting and left implementation details to follow-up discussions.
