Sonal Patel, who has volunteered at Austin Animal Services and co-founded Rescue ATX Dogs, told the court she helps run a foster-first rescue and emphasized forming personalized pathways for long-stay and medically vulnerable animals. "We must have a robust foster system," she said, and described working with volunteers and local rescues to speed outcomes. Commissioners unanimously approved her appointment after an executive session; Sonal's term was moved and seconded on the record and passed unanimously.
Other applicants (including Michelle Wittenberg, candidates who said they had extensive volunteer hours, and advocates active in county unincorporated areas) urged clearer standard operating procedures, better city-county coordination for calls in unincorporated areas and sustained spay/neuter capacity. Several applicants urged an emphasis on community education and partnerships so animals can be kept in homes or placed quickly into fosters and permanent adoptive households.
