County employee launches Brown Santa book drive to collect 20,000 children’s books

During early public comment at the June 16 meeting, Laura Seaton (technology and operations) highlighted the Travis County Sheriff's Office Brown Santa program and launched a summer book drive to collect age‑appropriate books for children through Sept. 4.
Seaton described Brown Santa as a long-running community initiative that began in 1981 and now reaches thousands of families and children in unincorporated parts of the county. "Brown Santa estimates they touch about 10,000 children each session with a stuffed friend, a puzzle, two toys or activities, and two books," Seaton said. She added county staff had collected over 7,000 books for the current campaign and encouraged departments to host drives and donate new or gently used books.
Seaton asked employees to contact her with questions and watch for a countywide email and Travis Central postings for collection instructions.
