VDOT contract for primary road mowing falls through; state crews to start interim cuts

Jamie Oliver, Isle of Wight County transportation director, told supervisors that VDOT has split mowing work into separate contracts for secondary and primary roads and the secondary contract is already underway. "They're going to start cutting our primaries on Monday using state forces," Oliver said, adding that VDOT expects a new primary contract to be reissued in 30 to 45 days and hopes it will be in place before the second scheduled cut in July.
Supervisors asked whether the county should notify residents and post the change on social media and the county website. Oliver said staff will publish an announcement and the county agreed to make the update public. The change may affect other state work priorities during the period when state crews are redeployed to mowing.
