Proposed feed mill for northern Beaufort County could link 35,000 sows to local grain market

Susan Squires reported on a Jan. 20 meeting that explored building a feed mill in the northern part of Beaufort County to serve several large hog operations. “Construction costs are estimated at $7–$8 million,” she told the advisory committee, and she said local farmers plan to donate land for the site and that the facility would likely employ three to five full-time workers.
Squires described the regional implications: the participating hog farms represent roughly 35,000 sows and the mill could create a local market for approximately 1 to 1.2 million bushels of grain, which would reduce freight costs now incurred hauling feed from Goldsboro. She said the project is being evaluated through a collaborative funding approach with potential grant support and that farm representatives planned a meeting on Jan. 29 to gauge further interest.
Attendees at the feeder-mill discussion included representatives for U.S. senators and a U.S. representative, county and state agriculture staff, NC Extension, EDPNC, local farmers and county commissioners.
