An aquaculture company based in Washington State is evaluating Beaufort County as a potential site for a trout hatchery, Susan Squires told the advisory committee. “The proposed project would involve an initial investment of approximately $15 million and is expected to create between 35 and 50 jobs,” she said.
Squires said the company operates four large facilities in Washington and that the North Carolina Department of Agriculture is leading the site-evaluation process. She identified water availability and permitting as key site-selection factors and said the county will prepare an incentive package should the company decide to move forward.
Committee members heard no final decision at the Jan. 22 meeting; Squires framed the discussion as an early-stage prospecting effort led by state agriculture officials.
