Board adopts Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct
Summary
Cumberland County supervisors approved a Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct covering public trust, conflicts of interest, decorum, and media contact procedures; the board voted to adopt the policy at its Jan. 13 meeting.
The Board on Jan. 13 unanimously approved a Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct for members outlining expectations for preserving public trust, avoiding conflicts, and maintaining civility in meetings.
The policy includes standards such as avoiding business with county government that conflicts with public duties, not using confidential information for private profit, and a requirement to make clear when an individual board member is speaking for themself rather than the board. "Recognizing that persons who hold public office have been given a public trust and that the stewardship of such office demands the highest levels of ethical and moral conduct," the code begins. The code also directs that these principles be reviewed publicly at the annual organizational meeting.
The measure was moved by Supervisor Stimpson and seconded by Supervisor Saunders and carried by unanimous vote.
