Board elects Newman chair and Tyree vice-chair for 2026

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 13 elected Supervisor John Newman as chairman for 2026 and Supervisor Eurika Tyree as vice-chair. The vote installing Newman as chair passed after nominations and a recorded roll call; Supervisor Hamlet voted nay on the chair election and Newman registered an abstention.
The chair vote followed nominations from the board and procedural discussion. Supervisor Paul Stimpson nominated Newman while Supervisor Bryan Hamlet nominated Supervisor Stimpson for chair. "On a motion by Supervisor Tyree, seconded by Supervisor Stimpson, and carried by the following vote, the Board appointed Supervisor Newman as Chairman of the Board for 2026," the meeting record states. The board later approved Tyree as vice-chair on a motion by Supervisor Stimpson, seconded by Supervisor Newman; Tyree abstained from that vote.
The officers will serve one-year terms under the Board’s adopted by-laws, which the board reviewed and adopted during the same meeting. The board’s procedural rules state the chairman presides over meetings, enforces decorum, and is an ex-officio member of committees.
