Cumberland County Board enters closed session to interview prospective candidate, later certifies meeting

On Jan. 8, 2026, the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors voted to enter a closed meeting to consider and interview a prospective candidate for employment. The motion to enter closed session was made by Supervisor Paul Stimpson and seconded by Supervisor Bryan Hamlet; the recorded vote showed Mrs. Tyree absent and other members voting in favor (Mr. Hamlet – aye; Mr. Newman – aye; Mrs. Tyree – absent; Mr. Stimpson – aye; Mr. Saunders – aye). The closed session was convened pursuant to Va. Code § 2.2-3711.A.1 (personnel matters).
After the closed meeting the Board reconvened in open session on a motion by Supervisor John Newman, seconded by Supervisor Bryan Hamlet, and adopted a certification in accordance with Va. Code § 2.2-3712 stating that, to the best of each member’s knowledge, only matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements were discussed and that no action was taken in closed session. The Board then adjourned until its next monthly meeting on January 13, 2026 (motion by Supervisor Stimpson, seconded by Supervisor Saunders).
