Fire Advisory Board member says study recommendations weren’t implemented and resigns from advisory board

Drew Womble introduced himself as a Fire Advisory Board member and a long-time volunteer and told commissioners that while many departments are requesting significant staffing increases, the county has not implemented recommended changes from a comprehensive fire study paid for by the county. He said the study showed 51% of surveyed citizens were very satisfied with services but that the study's recommendations had produced “virtually no meaningful changes.”
Womble said Deep River Fire Department has maintained its ISO rating and improved service without large staffing increases and urged measurable performance standards and clearer accountability before asking taxpayers for more funding. He concluded by saying he will not seek another term on the advisory board because it has not been used as intended.
