County approves $1.99 million intersection improvements at South Houston Lake Road and Smithville Church Road

The Houston County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 17 awarded a $1,992,497.35 contract to C. W. Matthews Contracting Company of Bolingbroke, Georgia, to construct intersection improvements at South Houston Lake Road and Smithville Church Road. Commissioner Gottwals presented the Engineering Department recommendation; funding will come from the 2018 SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax).
Chairman Perdue said the project grew from safety concerns raised during annexation discussions and from citizen concerns about through traffic in adjacent neighborhoods. The Board discussed requiring new commercial development at the intersection to use shared access to limit curb cuts; the City of Warner Robins supported the shared-access concept, Perdue said. No individual vote tallies were recorded; the motion carried unanimously.
