EDA tourism report: Drive Tourism grant approved; Restaurant Week and tall ships event planned

Tourism staff told the EDA that the Virginia Tourism Corporation approved a Drive Tourism Grant with a one-year performance period, Restaurant Week starts Jan. 16, and planning is underway for a proposed June 23 tall ships stop and an Urbanna Kayak Trail funded by a tourism grant.
At the Jan. 12 EDA meeting, Ms. Law presented the Tourism/Marketing report highlighting several near-term events and recent grant approvals. She told the board that "Restaurant week begins January 16th" and that 12 of 31 Middlesex restaurants will participate. She also reported the Drive Tourism Grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation was approved with a one-year performance period and described plans for a seasonal print guide in collaboration with the Friends of the Dragon Run.
Ms. Law described a new event concept for June 23 to host tall ships crews and said staff are discussing logistics and potential sponsorship; Anton Webre said organizers expect to make a funding request later but "there is no budget at this time." She further reported the VA Tourism Corporation grant approved funds for a proposed Urbanna Kayak Trail intended to buy two kayaks for free public use and noted staff are exploring a reservation system and an annual plan with Virginia's River Realm. The board asked staff to continue planning and to bring additional details at the February meeting.
