Thriving Hearts Crisis Center receives county proclamation recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The Guadalupe County Commissioner’s Court on Oct. 1 approved a proclamation recognizing October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month and welcomed representatives from Thriving Hearts Crisis Center (formerly Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter).
"We are so proud to be here. We've been in the community for 41 years," CEO Manaje Harika told the court, thanking commissioners for raising awareness of domestic violence and describing the center’s services. Agency staffer Ashley summarized confidential services — counseling, legal advocacy, shelter and a hotline — and said Thriving Hearts also serves Gonzales, Wilson and Karnes counties and is opening a satellite office in Gonzales County.
Harika shared national statistics to underscore the need for services: "In 2023, 179 women were killed because of domestic violence. 37 men were killed, 19 teenagers and 17 pregnant individuals, as well as 6 LGBTQ individuals," she said. Commissioners moved and seconded the proclamation; the court voted to approve it with no opposition and presented the proclamation to the center’s representatives.
