KDOT inspectors advise removing bridge T-831-2; Doniphan County continues chip-seal program

County officials reported a preliminary field inspection with Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) concerning LPA Bridge T-831-2 (project No. 22 C-5400-01), located south of U.S. Highway 36 on Oxide and 195th Road. Commissioner Wayne Grable said KDOT officials agreed the county should remove the bridge structure and build up the roadway rather than replace the bridge; he said the county could change the scope of the project and reapply for bridge funding later if it chooses.
Road Office Manager Lindsay Norris reminded the board the bridge had been submitted to the Federal-aid Off‑System Bridge Program because of its poor rating and its role as an alternate route to U.S. 36. Norris noted the county must legally determine whether the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way has been abandoned and reverted to adjoining landowners before adjusting the project scope.
Separately, Norris reported that Rob Lyons with Vance Brothers, Inc. advised the county’s 2026 chip seal projects were scheduled to finish on July 2, 2026; Lyons and his supervisor inspected 2025 oil-and-chip roads and found them structurally sound, with Vance Brothers committing to correct any problems before the end of the chip-seal season.
