Bertie County approves order to advertise unpaid 2025 taxes and two budget amendments

The Bertie County Board of Commissioners approved an order Feb. 16 authorizing staff to advertise unpaid real and personal property taxes for fiscal year 2025 and approved two budget amendments.
Tax collector Jody Ray told the board that, as of Jan. 26, unpaid real-property taxes totaled $1,189,762.05 and personal-property unpaid was $149,427.03, for a combined total of $1,339,234.08; he reported the current total had dropped to about $1,147,971.30. Ray asked the board for an order to advertise for collection of the unpaid real-property taxes; a motion to allow advertising was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Finance director Willie Carroll presented two budget amendments: one to record and disburse approximately $100,000 in additional registered-deed excise tax revenue that was not previously budgeted, and a second to separate concealed-weapon permit revenues and offsetting expenditures into the proper lines. The board moved and approved the amendments during the meeting.
The board also received an audit update; auditors are sampling documents with a planned audit completion in April, and staff will continue providing requested records to auditors.
